Review of Magic Mike (2012) by Dan H — 19 Jun 2013
Surprisingly Magic Mike is more of a bro film than a chick flick. We do get plenty of male ass and stripping scenes, but there's no dick that I can remember (some nice breast shots too). The heart of the film is the bro-mance between Mike and Adam (More of a character study film than a plot-driven film), and Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer both do pretty good performances and share a natural chemistry together (McConaughey is also great as the sleazy owner of the strip club).
There is also a sub-plot about Mike and Brooke, the kind of bitchy sister of Adam (The insanely hot Cody Horn) but that only pops up here and there, it's not as big a part of the story as the trailers make it out to be.
In reality, Magic Mike is really an intimate drama. It's fun, serious, a bit sad and even surprisingly dark. Another great outing from Steven Soderberg who has yet to disappoint me yet.
