Review of Magic Mike (2012) by Lauren B — 15 May 2015
No, no, No, no! Lets just take a step back and look at how good of a movie Magic Mike is on a fundamental level. We are fast-tracked into the smoke-filled backrooms and adrenaline-fueled stages of Tampa's strip scene.
This is a seedy yet complex world. A world that the average person passes off as a joke in a conversation. We laugh, but the film works on so many levels. I found myself legitimately concerned for Mike, The Kid, and his sister Brooke.
The guys aren't dumb, ignorant, or jerks as may be originally perceived. They are working class people with a head for business, a touch of the dramatic, and an eye for the ladies. By the way, a wickedly smarmy and snaky Matthew McConaughey absolutely steals the show.
Anyone who loves a deep story, compelling characters, emotional conflict, and...well strippers should enjoy much.
