Review of Magic Mike (2012) by Sadie H — 04 Aug 2013
Following the conventions that are expected from this sort of fare, and there's anything wrong with that, 'Magic Mike' fails to achieve the dramatic punch or sensuality that it aims for. Lacking the heart of other male strip-flick 'The Full Monty' (1997) or fun absurdity of 'Showgirls' (1995), Steven Soderbergh takes the material too seriously, but that's not to say that there aren't good elements to the production.
The questionable dance routines are complimented by some wonderful costumes, the performers, needless to say, exhibit aesthetic perfection and central figures Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer and Matthew McConaughey add their credible acting chops to the piece.
The naturalistic dialogue scenes are particularly well done, indicating the sort of drama the film was thriving for. Whilst not a total write-off, 'Magic Mike' falls short of its potential.
