Review of Magic in the Moonlight (2014) by Jack G — 13 Aug 2014
A very enthusiastic Rental, or a Low Matinee. it's stars shine bright, to sound cheesy (but it's Emma Stone, who I think the Woodman would probably try to get with if he wasn't like 100), and its a very bright and sunny and interesting movie that is just a stagey trifle - I have to think this was originally a play and he made it into a filmable script - and everyone involved knows it.
but it has a romantic air about it, and it has such a distinctive air for the period and the look and language of the actors that it could be a "programmer" from the early 30s. or, to be most generous, a light work from Lubitsch.
but as a trifle, it's not bad. it just... is.
