Review of Magic in the Moonlight (2014) by Stephen F — 20 Aug 2014
Not Woody Allen's best work by a long shot, but I applaud his efforts to create a movie that is different from his typical formula. While you can argue that Colin Firth's character is similar to a character Woody Allen would play in his older movies, he is actually quite different because this time around we have a male character that is beyond confident in himself and his capabilities.
This movie also starts off as drama/comedy more than a typical romance. The comedy is there yet not obvious, so it will be lost on some but tickle others depending on their sense of humor. Ultimately, I didn't want to like this movie since it doesn't rank with some of his most recent work (Midnight in Paris, Blue Jasmine), but I found myself feeling similar emotions to Colin Firth's character at the end.
While he didn't want to accept or understand the fact that he loved Emma Stone's character, he still couldn't deny that it was true despite it defying logic. The same goes for me about this movie: my enjoyment of this movie defies logic and many things that I stand for, yet being able to feel the same emotions as the character on the screen speaks volumes for me and deserves recognition.
