Review of Magic in the Moonlight (2014) by Qin M — 27 Mar 2015
It's about a smug skeptic who finds magic and meaning in spite of himself. Not sure how Colin Firth could make such a pompous guy be so charming but he pulls it off. He was a brilliant choice for this role because I don't think anybody else could have done that. I was a little leery of Emma Stone being his love interest but the fact that she IS younger and her character is so effervescent makes it more believable that he would eventually fall for someone like her. On paper their relationship defies logic (as Stanley's conversation with his aunt illustrates), but in every other way it just makes sense.
There is some beautiful scenery. The movie is funny and cheerful, with a great cast. I enjoyed it, and I really like Woody Allen's string of Euro-centered films he's made in the past few years. There's something wonderful about all of them, even if they're not so great overall (i.e. "To Rome With Love").
