Review coming, in short: Of course this movie seems lifeless, AO Scott, the protagonist is a pessimist - not every Woody movie needs to be bright like "Midnight in Paris". And the pessimism that is present in nearly every scene is why critics pan it, this is natural, look at the history of any pessimist writer or philosopher or filmmaker that was overlooked at the moment for the simple reason people do not want to be told their life is meaningless, that they're insignificant - no, audiences want a warm slap on the back, the good old re-asurence that even if the material is seeping in despair there's still optimistic, re-assurance that life is special, in particular their life is special and not just stardust. Boo-hoo, there's David O. Russel movies to fill one with optimism - "Magic in the Moonlight" refuses to comfort the audience and why should it?

Edit* A second viewing provides more pleasure. And I submit that Andrew O'Heher and Salon are the ones to be questioned - since Greenwald's departure the website has stooped to blaming atheists for problems in the economy, articles like "Why Does Anyone Take Sam Harris Seriously", and numerous articles that have headlines straight from the comment section of their website. Salon is a gossip rag dying for attention - Woody Allen is still making enlightening, beautiful, and clever movies.

Stop saying "minor Woody", critics, for it sounds like you're all reading from the same script you've been using to slam perfectly fine Woody Allen movies for the past two decades.

Edit: Now even RT has stooped to "too slight to stand with Woody Allen's finest work" . . . pathetic, take note from Mr. Tony Scott, he disliked the movie and had a damn good reason and his criticism doesn't read as though it were taken from the "not Woody's best" script critics enjoy so much.
