Review of Magic (1978) by Michael S — 27 Sep 2008
A crisply chilling film - one which taunts and juggles and subverts our expectations until one is left so frustrated or exhausted that come the finale it is hard to decipher exactly what has just transpired.
Was it a supernatural film? Was it a horror film or more a psychological thriller? Was it a love story? A tragedy? In fact it is all these things. It is most importantly a character study so sadly depicted that when the more frightening elements of the story come about, we care.
An example of how an imperfect film can still be one of my very favorites. 'Magic' is not flawless, but it is (in my opinion of course) an utterly unique experience for an audience. One weaves through the story, trying to make predictions of what will occur - hell the story of a ventriloquist and his power-hungry dummy is an old chestnut - but the emotional punch-in-the-gut of the climax is the real surprise.
A horror film with heart. Scary...
