Review of Magic (1978) by Andrew M — 19 Jul 2009
Finally found a copy of this and was not disappointed.. Now I don't see this as a horror film, not due to lack of scares or suspense, but rather, it's so much deeper then that. This film, if anything, is an excellent showcase of mental illness- to see Hopkins (one of, in my opinion, the greatest actors around) play this obviously ill character as well as he does, not only Corky the troubled ventriloquist but also his more dominant and twisted personality in the dummy Fats, is a sight in itself.
You feel for him, because right off the bat you know there is something wrong with him that he can't deal with or face. This movie should be seen just for his performance alone, because he pulls it off so well.
. That and the dummy is really fucking creepy- had to be said.
