Review of Magic (1978) by Will L — 25 Apr 2016
One of the more underrated gem's of the late 70's it was ruined by it's ad campaign and not many people getting it. It's less a horror film and more a story of both loss and mental trauma. Hopkins was always a shy guy who never was loud enough on his own to get the girl or suceed in life so he had to find another way to be loud which was through the dummy. It worked, but at the cost of his sanity. He finally steps up but at what price is he willing to pay? Is it worth sacrfycing stardom over his love or mental state?
Hopkins is outstanding and gave an award worthy performance. Oscar worthy but it was a strong year so he wouldn't have won. Margret was likeable, Ed Lauter played one of his few scummy roles well, and Meredith was Meredith as badass as ever. Great score by Jerry Goldsmith and Attenbrough did a great job dirrecting.
I'd highly recomind this if you love either character stories, creepy films, or tragedies. Not a horror film but it delivers the goods.
