Review of Madea Goes to Jail (2009) by Yasmine L — 14 Sep 2009
Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail, is fine on a stand alone basis, but it is far from the original play. Having watched the play, I was surprised at many of the script changes and the few times Madea actually showed up.
The one thing that bothers me most about Tyler Perry's writing is that he tends to linger more on the drama than the comedy. It seemed 90% of the movie was about the lawyer and his female friend, than Madea going to jail.
I have nothing wrong with this at all, but when a movie is marketed as a comedy about Madea going to jail, that's what I expected initially.
Tyler Perry is an interesting writer, but many times his drama goes a little over the board. Yes, a little realistic situations other than Madea's comedy fun is all right, but when it covers up the rest of the movie, and it seems Madea is more off a sideline story, it becomes annoying.
The play is much better than the movie, by far. However, the movie is a little more dynamic than the play, if you know what I mean. This is a good Sunday afternoon 'I want to watch this today...' movie, but it's not something I would buy and oogle over for the next few years.
