Review of Madea Goes to Jail (2009) by Forrest P — 31 Mar 2010
I am a fan of the Tyler Perry plays, and this was my favorite of his plays. Unfortunately, Tyler Perry does not seem to be as accomplished of a director for the big screen as for the stage.
Madea hits the audiences with the laughs and really does well. Perry seems to make a better actor (as a woman) than as a director or screenwriter, which is very unfortunate.
I have a lot of respect for the drama Perry brings to the stage, but onscreen, the drama is overly forced and very poorly directed. Far too much forced melodrama and not enough sincerity.
However, I will say that I was relieved that Madea got a laugh for most of the scenes that she appeared onscreen.
Still, it is undeniable that Tyler Perry does have a lot of talent for the stage, but not for the film.
