Review of Madea Goes to Jail (2009) by Tino R — 11 Jul 2011
Why did Tyler Perry have to mix melodrama with what should be a straight up comedy. It would be one thing if the drama was good, but this is low-level melodrama that you wouldn't even see on bad soap operas.
There's this woman and apparently every man in her life has used her for sexual favors, she was beat up by a pimp, and she was raped by a bunch of dudes one night, and she's a junkie. Like Christ, Tyler Perry is just shit at creating interesting dramatic backstories for his characters.
And the thing is, he ACTUALLY thinks that his drama stuff is better than the comedy because there was far more of shitty melodramatics than there was Madea. He actually believed this, it's just amazing to me that this guy completely accentuated his own weaknesses as a writer.
There's also that one scene where Derek Luke's character breaks down in fucking HYSTERICS, and it was the worst thing you've ever seen. It was just a horrendous and laughably bad scene. And if at least the comedy was decent, Madea has some funny moments, but it's not enough to overcome the serious half of the film, if this movie was a straight up drama, it might have been one of the worst movies I'd ever seen.
At least, there was a little bit of comedy to save it from the seventh level of purgatory. It's still a really bad movie.
