Review of Made in Jamaica (2006) by Mike M — 26 Oct 2009
A diverting jumble that reflects a certain confusion of styles and themes... There are at least two gross editorial lapses here: firstly, a series of encounters with a beautiful young woman who turns out to be a stripper - whose sole function within the film is to drape herself over an embarrassed-looking Gregory Isaacs; secondly, the director's failure to confront Elephant Man on the issue of the homophobia and sexism that proliferates in his lyrics.
The scene seems a model of rude musical health, but while Laperrousaz has a high old time at the party, he doesn't concern himself overly with what happens the morning after.
