Review of Made in Dagenham (2010) by William M — 22 Jan 2011
Set in the summer of 1968, in Dageham, England, this British flick based on a true story delivers the goods on many levels. At the Ford plant, 187 semi-skilled, female machinists begin to realize that they've been getting half of their male counterparts' wages simply because Ford could choose to leave it that way.
They organize, form work stoppages, & get the attention of the media...somewhat organically, but with some obvious pitfalls. With the help of solidarity and persistence, the female workers finally garner some unprecedented achievements as far as wages for women in the workplace are concerned.
Unfortunately, these are lessons still yet to be executed in this country & at this time (women still tend to make only 75% of their male counterparts' wages). A history lesson for all...especially young women.
Definitely in the spirit of "Norma Rae" & "Iron Jawed Angels". Sally Hawkins just might get nominated for a BEST ACTRESS Oscar. Playing @ your local arthouse cinema. Should be hittin' DVD around March or April.
