Review of Made in Dagenham (2010) by Ben R — 06 Oct 2010
Ok, so I managed to go to the cinema and NOT wear silly glasses. the audience for this picture was very mature and there was a classic comment from the row behind us as the trailer to the new gordon gecko film finished, "oooh, I think that might be the sequel to that wall street film.
.." had us laughing at least. on the way to the cinema marc kermode likened 'made in dagenham' to 'the full monty' which immediately set alarm bells ringing but ignored them and proceeded as normal.
.. to the film, initially I was going to give this five stars but now, a day later, I decided to give it four. it was a bit of a slow burner but sally hawkins character really makes the experience worthwhile, bob hoskins is very good in it, he manages to make you believe in his character and forget that it is bob hoskins playing a character; something which kermode bemoans about the current trend from hollywood films.
some laugh-out-loud moments in the film but I didn't feel overyl emotionally engaged with any of the characters bar 'rita'. I did get a bit angry with the slimy, inneffective 'union rep', as he was the archetypal old school fat comrade, using the union subs for expensive restaurants and hotels.
but, all in all, I feel-good movie that after watching the credits makes you realise how people can change the world against the scum-bag capitalists.
