I think people get a bit hung up on acting and star-power when thinking about this movie. I don't doubt that both Vaugn and Favreau are bad performers, but this script was pretty weak and I can't say Favreau hadn't embraced his directorial talent to it's full potential at that point.

That's not an attack on him, few directors absolutely nail it with their first piece. Unfortunately, his writing was even worse than his directing. All the sets and costumes were great, it looked all looked okay.

But the scenes were drenched in cliche, with some extremely plain dialogue. It was satisfactory, but not spectacular. The cast was not a problem, Favreau at least got that bit right. With a stronger leader and writing team this film could have been alot better.
