Review of Madame X (1966) by Daniel K — 27 May 2010
3: I took me a little while to realize this was Lana Turner. It is not her most riveting performance, but it is worthy of comparison with the work of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, who also eventually embraced their age.
The problem was she only embraced her age in the second and third acts of the film, whereas in the first act she attempted to regain a bit of her youth. The film is superbly entertaining, as the best Hollywood genre pictures are.
One is kept on the edge of their seat, despite the fact that they have more than an inkling of how the picture will turn out. I've seen many variations on this theme, but perhaps none so melodramatic.
The court room scenes are a little ridiculous when it comes to form, but this could easily be forgiven by this viewer. Very solid entertainment.
