I've never seen the first one, and I only saw this one because Columbia House sent it to me. It's not terrible or anything, but it's not that good either. I think the best way to sum it up is to say that watching this movie reminds you why Pixar wins best 'animated movie' every year and Dreamworks doesn't.
I wouldn't even recommend a rental, but if you have kids you probably already own it, so I guess it doesn't really matter.
