Alex, Marty, Melman, Gloria and King Julien are back.
In what I consider the weakest installment of the franchise, Madagascar 3 is not able to reproduce the hilarious dialogue and running gags of the previous film in the series (which I consider the best of the three) but relies more on slapstick. Funny slapstick though, but all in all, I think Europe's Most Wanted is more of a kids movie with only occasional scenes for adults to enjoy.
It's colourful, it uses pop music very smartly (as all the franchise's films do) and, even though Dreamworks has never been a visual powerhouse, features one of the most mesmerizing sequences of the year, with this circus performance in London.
Nevertheless, I found huge distractions in the film.
Firstly, the police subplot was totally unnecessary, and Officer DuBois just way too over-the-top for my taste. The penguins (who allegedly get their own feature film) were underused, so was annoying King Julien (I never thought I'd say this one day...).
Also, Martin Short, Jessica Chastain and Frances McDormand sported some of the worst fake accents I've ever heard in a film (especially in one that made tons of dough). Was it a lack of dedication, or just another way to please the children?
