Review of Madagascar (2005) by Aaron A — 23 Jun 2011
"Just smile and wave, boys. Smile and wave.".
Synopsis: After escaping from the zoo, four friends -- a lion , a hippo, a zebra and a giraffe-- are sent back to Africa, but their ship capsizes, stranding them on Madagascar.
The first third to half of the film is almost completely void of interesting characters, animation, comedy and plot, and terribly easy to see what Madagascar essentially is, an attempt to conjure up millions of moviegoing dollars with little inspiration to do so with. However, the film does greatly pick up after the animal make it to the wild and the really funny lemurs are introduced to the audience.
The comedy in this film is more familiar to the three stooges than many competing animated flicks, instead of relying on wit and smart writing, Madagascar relies on physical comedy to produce laughs. While not a bad thing to rely on physical comedy, I found many segments of the movie trying too hard to produce laughs.
Though the film often tries way too hard to be funny and isn't always successful, Madagascar does the job well enough.
