Review of Madagascar (2005) by Robert C — 29 Oct 2011
This is a very fun animated film from DreamWorks. It is a small step away from "Shrek 2" and "Shark Tale", and it tries to be something worthy of "Shrek", although it doesn't quite make it.
Some cheap pop culture jokes and lowbrow humor aside, the first half of the film was great, it was frenetic and fast-paced. Once the characters got to Madagascar, it went downhill from there. The potential was squandered.
Then it broke off into a subplot where the lion, Alex, becomes a predator and tries to eat his zebra friend Marty. It somewhat lost its steam once that subplot started to kick in. The penguins were a hoot, and they weren't overused in the film.
The animation wasn't great, but the character animation was better than the stiff and uninteresting animation seen in the "Shrek" films and "Shark Tale". It tries to be more stylistic, but it's still nothing spectacular.
It's a lot better than most of DreamWorks' films, but it still has a lot of flaws.
