Review of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) by Nate A — 09 May 2009
Was disappointed by this, especially after the greatness of 'The Road Warrior'. It starts out promising enough. Then Tina Turner enters, and it's all downhill from there. Tina, you're great and so's your music, but please, never be in another action movie! Didn't buy her (or her androgynous cronies) for an instant as some battle-hardened warriors of the wastelands. It doesn't help that she supplies two terrible songs to the soundtrack.
Then Mel Gibson fights a midget (well, the guy who carries the midget anyway) and it gets better there. But then it takes a terrible and irreparable turn into "Hook" territory by teaming up Max with a tribe of children who, through their pluck and moxy, overcome the warriors of Tina Turner.
I've heard there's a 4th movie in the works. I hope they take the time to try and make it good, because it would be terrible to leave this franchise on this movie.
I will say though that the soundtrack by the later Maurice Jarre (who wrote the legendary score for Lawrence of Arabia) is quite good.
