Review of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) by Doctor S — 14 Oct 2008
'Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome' Blows A Tire.
It's that same old pattern: OK but stylish Aussie film followed by knockout action sequel followed by Hollywood overindulgence. That's where Thunderdome landed with surely one of the 1980s most bizarre fit of casting: Tina Turner in chainmail and a blonde fright wig?? Shows what people think you can do when you have a #1 album. Check out these reviews though, they made me crap my pants:
"More visionary and more entertaining than the first two." -- Roger Ebert.
MORE visionary?? As in, regurgitating the same trendsetting vision from the first two? Riiiight, the imitator has a leg up on the originator, so that's how it's done now.
"This film has showier stunts than its predecessors." -- Janet Maslin.
This is a joke right, I mean it HAS to be. Was she even awake during the final quarter of The Road Warrior??? Unbelievable. The critics must've screened a secret print that wasn't released to the general public, maybe it'll come out as a Special Edition DVD someday so the rest of us can figure out where they got these ideas. Or they could tell us what they were smoking.
