Review of Mad Max 2 (1981) by Jon L — 31 May 2010
If the original "Mad Max" was like a shot of red bull, this flick is the equivalent of doing crank. When the micro-budgeted "Mad Max" went huge all around the world, writer-director George Miller was granted a budget effectively thirty times the amount of the original film.
This is what resulted - a movie with the absolute barest possible bones of plot and dialogue, but one that you walk away from with a big, goofy grin on your face. Everyone is free to interpret the story (group of marauders refining gasoline in a fuel-hungry world fight off repeated attacks from bloodthirsty, warmongering outsiders), but what can't be debated is this movie's effectiveness as an action film.
The best car chases ever put to film, a badass antihero in Gibson's Max, and pure moviemaking carnage are on display for all to see here.
