Review of Mad Max (1979) by Shawn C — 19 May 2012
I have a hard time seeing what makes this film so interesting. I understand that it was filmed on a budget, but you'd think they could have at least roughed the sets up a bit more. The whole time all I could think was, "This is supposed to be post-apocalyptic? Looks downright comfy to me.
" The entire idea seems weighted around car chases and features very little human drama (or much of a script to speak of). Max himself doesn't even become "Mad" until the last few minutes of the movie.
Maybe I'm coming from a weird place since I watched all three films in order, whereas the majority of Americans got their first exposure to Max through 1981's "The Road Warrior". At any rate, the sequels are much more fully realized and enjoyable.
