Review of Mad Max (1979) by Ryan P — 06 Dec 2012
According to Wikipedia, this movie was made on an estimated $650,000 budget (the maximum amount, director George Miller claimed it was only between $350,000 and $400,000), but went on to make over $100,000,000 world wide -- ''For 20 years, the movie held a record in Guinness Book of Records as the highest profit-to-cost ratio of a motion picture.
..'' As far as the film is concerned, I thought it was just okay. The ''violent, post-apocalyptic'' setting wasn't convincing, and I felt it had a lot of plot development issues.
I guess the film is mainly known for its low-budget action sequences anyway, which were only alright at best for me. I've seen better. George Miller probably did the best work he could, considering the financial constraints.
It also had a good score and a decent performance from Mel Gibson, in the role that he emerged from as an international star. But, all in all, I don't see ''Mad Max'' as anything special.
I'd only recommend viewing it if you have nothing else to watch/do. Heard the sequel was great, though, so looking forward to that.
