Review of Mad Max (1979) by Ed Fucking H — 08 Jan 2011
This Sci-Fi/Action cult classic is really an exploitation film at heart. Both in terms of the look and feel as well as the content and the theme of Vengenace which was really common amongst exploitation films of the day.
The plot is really simple. Max, who is basically a goodguy, kills a gang member at the begining of the film. The Gang comes around to get their revenge. They Kill Max's partner and his family, and he is pushed to the buisiness of revenge.
The Car chases are highly exciting and the stunts are phenominal. The film really nails the environment of the barren wasteland, dystopian future that the film is trying to get across. The acting is mostly sub par but perfectly acceptable given the context.
My main gripe with this film however is that it shys away from real content in favour of mindless excitement and action, and although it does that well I think that this flaw holds the movie back from really being as good as the reputation it enjoys would have you believe.
Still a classic without a doubt, but I would also say that it is slightly over rated.
