Review of Mad Max (1979) by Grant G — 04 Feb 2015

This movie is all about bikes and cars : speed, chases and crashes. There's quite a lot of action so it's not boring at all. The problem in this vintage movie is the soundtrack wich is very annoying with all those effects to accentuate the emotions. The plot is very basic. It's a revenge story between the good (cops) and the bad (outlaws). Those weirdos are supposed to be scary but they are just funny.

And creative, because there are lots of good ideas like at the end when Max becomes mad (because they killed his wife and son) and gives a saw to the man he handcuffed, so that he can free himself cutting his own ankle...

But apart from that, Mel Gibson plays the role of a nice guy, not a charismatic antihero. What disappointed me even more was that the world depicted didn't look post-apocalyptic at all ! There's everything : gas, station, cafés, TV, news etc... There's absolutely no reference to any catastrophy. I remembered Mad Max for the deserts. Instead there was Australia's sunny countryside. Fortunately it gets better after the first movie.
