Review of Mad Max (1979) by Danny O — 18 Aug 2015
Mad Max is a fun but forgettable movie. The acting is pretty good, I especially liked Mel Gibson as Max, he was a pretty simple and likable hero. The movie has not aged all that well, but I do appreciate the well filmed and executed action sequences.
The central conflict of the movie feels natural and the stakes are relatively small scale but effective. The story definitely wasn't as engaging as I was hoping, it was decent but I never got pulled into the story.
The characters and writing are just ok, none of it was special. The pacing could have been improved as well. I liked a lot of the ideas and themes in the movie like revenge and guilt. The characters and their interactions feel natural and not forced, so I did like the main characters enough.
It really doesn't break any ground in movie making like many have said, but it's enjoyable none the less.
