Review of Mad Max (1979) by Tyler R — 19 Sep 2015
A grindhouse cult classic at its finest. When you watch it now, sure, it is cheesy and hokey, but it still holds up well enough. The stunts are still impressive and the world building is elegantly simple.
The film shows a not too distant future where crime has picked up immensely causing some areas to be dangerous to the point where a special police force is required. George Miller's directorial debut is a brief one.
It feels like it ends no sooner than it begins. But within those brisk ninety minutes, Miller crafts a world and fills it with larger than life characters and insane rules to disregard. The acting can be hokey, and Mel Gibson's Australian accent certainly falters now and then, but Gibson makes the character his own and shows the beginning of such an iconic character.
Effects wise, the stunts are nothing shy of impressive. This was during the heyday of practical effects and stunts. If you see it, it actually happened, and Miller stages it beautifully. The film ends with the beginning of a legend, and even after more than thirty years, that beginning is one hell of a wild ride.
