Review of Mad Dog and Glory (1993) by Lozza H — 24 Oct 2006
This is the great character theft - catch the one who did it! Mad Dog and Glory, an overtly pretentious film that honestly believes it's doing us a favour by placing Bill Murray in the role you'd think Robert De Niro would play, and putting De Niro in the role you'd expect Murray to play.
It doesn't work, making you want to throw your popcorn at the screen in sheer horror, thinking 'if only' director John McNaughton had taken his finger out of his arse and put those two brilliant actors in the roles they could play in their sleep, then we'd have a movie here.
Bill Murray would have made De Niro's character at least halfway interesting (and funny), instead we get a bored looking De Niro not knowing whether he should say 'Are you looking at me' or tell Uma Thurman he loves her.
This poor film is just a string of meaningless conversations with a plot that takes a backseat to people just turning up for the paycheck. What a waste of such great talent!
