Review of Mad Detective (2007) by Bill B — 30 Nov 2015
I love Johnny To. He's completely bonkers. In this film he has a main character that can see what people are really like inside. The titular "mad detective" who instructs one of his underlings to put him inside a suitcase and push him down a flight of stairs in order for him to understand how the victim of a murder felt.
After he pops out dazed and barely able to stand he shouts "the ice cream salesman did it". In the following scene he slices his own ear off as a mark of respect to the retiring chief of police.
I now have another director whose back catalogue needs exploring post-haste! He has a lot in common with Takashi Miike only he's not quite as prolific.
