Review of Machuca (2004) by Federico L — 19 Dec 2007
A political film that tells its devastating story through a human relationship -- two boys separated by class and opportunity. Just the one brief shot of a Victor Jara poster in a shanty conveys what pages of writing never could.
(Jara was the the Chilean folk-protest singer tortured and assassinated by the US-supported military coup that gave rise to the Pinochet dictatorship; Jara was killed merely for speaking out in music.
) Machuca is highly recommended.
