Review of Machine Gun Preacher (2011) by Kc E — 10 Mar 2012
This is based on a true story, normally when you hear that you can assume it's slotted in as a credential only but in this case it really is. A tale of a man who comes from the wrong side of the street and finds Christianity but then decides to take the line "onward Christian soldiers" to the next level.
He becomes the guardian of hundreds of orphans in the Sudan who are being regularly kidnapped and abused in all sorts of horrific ways. The Machine Gun in question is used to repel attempts at this happening by a ramshackled group of Islamic Militia.
Take Hotel Rwanda, give Don Cheadle an AK47 and there you have it. There is a crisis of faith on the part of our hero (which never actually happened in reality) to keep our juices flowing, but apart from that this is more like a biopic of Sam Childers the guy who actually did this.
Great movie, well acted and the best bit, it brings attention to a horrible situation which is ongoing in the Sudan.
