Review of Machine Gun Preacher (2011) by Mara A — 22 May 2013
This should really be a must see for everyone...though it's rated R for a reason and might not be appropriate for everyone. A few places the story gets confusing, and to be honest I never really understood the "conversion" part of him going from a drug-dealing ex-con to a man who would risk everything, give up everything, to help some kids a half a world away.
I wish the screenwriters would have fleshed out that part a little more...because it really didn't come across. If this hadn't been based on a true life story, I wouldn't have believed anyone would make that kind of sacrifice, based on what the movie showed. I can only guess the movie ran long and parts had to be cut out, and that's where they cut from.
But even looking at it as just a movie and a couple hours of entertainment, it's well worth the watch. If you dig deeper and see it as a social commentary, it's an even more worth use of 2 hours. Ignore the negative reviews...it's a movie that will stick with you, for a long time. Mainly I think because it doesn't wrap everything in a nice neat bow. It really doesn't give answers, but sure brings up a whole lot of questions.
