Review of MacGruber (2010) by Sam P — 11 Apr 2012
Okay, I never thought I would say this, but I actually preferred âDonâ(TM)t Mess With The Zohanâ? to this film. Even though I wasnâ(TM)t impressed by Adam Sandlerâ(TM)s film, it was sometimes funny, and played it right in having the hero perfect, over-the-top perfect, which is much better then the joke that was this film. I have never seen the Saturday Night Live sketches, so for all I know this is a magnificent version of MacGruber, but I am unconvinced.
Ironically the first 20 minutes werenâ(TM)t too bad, it built up the story well, was displaying one or two funny bits, and then it introduced us to âThe Teamâ?, which looked fucking awesome:
Involved were MVP, Kane, Great Khali, Mark Henry & Chris Jericho, who would be a hell of a team. And then they got blown up. Even though it allowed the interesting Piper, played by Ryan Phillipe, & Vicki, to be brought in, I really think a trick was missed with these 5 wrestlers, plus the homosexual Big Show character. The problem is the very fact that the protagonist is a âtoolâ?. He is not at all likable, he is a coward (using another character as a human shield), an idiot (the antagonist thought he was dead for ten yearsâ¦.5 minutes into the mission, the antagonist, Cunth, knew this wasnâ(TM)t true. Cunth was funny for 15 minutes, then got old), and most painful of all, not funny. I had given up on any chance of the film being any good when it got to two of the most cringe-worthy sex scenes I have ever seen in my life.
I am actually gutted, I have hopes for this film, but it failed extremely badly when it got to the end. Whilst Val Kilmer was a good antagonist, and several good supporting characters, Will Arnett let the film down, as well as the script. Wasnâ(TM)t funny, in fact was awful overall.
