Review of MacGruber (2010) by Jérôme M — 12 Jan 2014
A very underrated cult hit. An SNL film that is better than the ones after "Wayne's World 2" ("Coneheads" to "The Ladies Man"), though it could've been better, like as good as "The Blues Brothers" and "Wayne's World", it still is a great film.
Surprised the Flixster user ratings are very low on this film. Oh well. The film continues the "MacGruber" sketch by telling the story of the military requiring MacGruber to help them find a nuclear weapon named the X-5, and take down whoever toke it and plans to do with the weapon.
The low-budget action comedy may use shock value as real humor, but that is thrown out at times as it helps with the comedy, making the film extremely funny. The film's R-rating leads to even more laughs (like "The Blues Brothers"), and so does Will Forte's hilarious portrayal of MacGruber, nailing the awful attitude, and dimwit personality that makes him, sketch, and the film the perfect MacGyver spoof.
The film has awesome over-the-top spoofing, incredible over-the-top action, extremely over-the-top and graphic violence, extremely over-the-top crude humor, and nonstop over-the-top comedy. The film has smart direction from Jorma Taccone (creator of the sketch), a smart script from Jorma Taccone, Will Forte, and John Solomon (the writers of the sketch), and hilarious acting.
Somewhat surprised how the film failed at the box office (many bad SNL films were a cause of it I believe), as the film made $9,322,895 on a $10 million budget. A good film, and worth-watching for MacGruber, SNL, parody, action comedy, and crude film fans.
