Review of Macbeth (2015) by Rich B — 03 Oct 2015
What a terrible disappointment. Fassbender seemed miscast, the dialogue was so mumbled that it was hard to know what people were saying bar the times when the original Shakespeare cut through. In my opinion, the director just does not understand this work, I had no sense of the weight of guilt that Macbeth and his wife were brought down by or the fact that these were two ambitious people who did such a terrible thing, that whatever they gained from that act was empty and worthless as they couldn't reconcile the monstrous act with their consciences.
The idea of setting Duncan's murder at a camp rather than in Macbeth's home made no sense and detracted from the drama. I did enjoy the performances of the witches and theirs was an interesting take on the roles.
Overall, superficial, but pretentious, unfocused, confused (and confusing) and ultimately extremely dull. A Macbeth for Game of Thrones fans, but without the imagination or skill.
