Review of Macbeth (2015) by Roger T — 07 Oct 2015
Unbelievably dreadful. The characters whisper and mutter unintelligibly to each other, usually at about 3" distance, their strangled speech almost drowned out by monotonously dreary string sounds.
During long pregnant pauses they work hard at looking seriously ferocious. Some of the best lines are missing, others are so leadenly delivered they have the impact of a dead sheep. Much time is taken up with panned shots of rainswept mountainous terrain, with the same droning noises from the string quartet.
Lady Macbeth would look more at home cuddling a kitten than dashing babies' brains out, and the scene (not Shakespeare) where Lady Macduff and offspring are burned alive descends into pure farce. Is there anything good to say? The baby scene and Macbeth's battle-fatigue flashbacks - although not Shakespeare - could maybe be utilised in a future film to give some insight.
Otherwise, as Big Mac himself might have said, 'If my life had ended before this film I had lived a blessed time!".
