Review of Mac and Me (1988) by Cliff M — 05 Feb 2009
If you want to talk the gold standard in shameless, incestuous, corporately controlled, creatively bankrupt Hollywood, 1988's Mac and Me is the immortal champion. I remember seeing this as a kid, and am glad it did not leave a lasting impression, as I can only imagine that as akin to muscular dystrophy, or face AIDs. This is a piss poor extended Coke commercial, wrapped in an incredibly transparent attempt to recreate E.T., wrapped in a McDonald's commercial (there is a reason Mac is spelled like the big burger... dance party under the golden arches everyone!). The alien creature designs are so terrible I find them personally offensive on some unconscious level, like a week long ethnic slur formed in to a flaming lance, thrown through the heart of my inner child on his Birthday. The playful, bubble gum wrapper font in squiggly line word bubble "we'll be back!" arriving at the end of the film is truly chilling.
This is all of course to say Mac and Me is a fantastic watch, and I couldn't have enjoyed my recent re-watch more. I implore you to grab a beer, some friends, and watch this slow motion train wreck over and over for limitless fun times.
