Review of Mac and Me (1988) by Tom R — 29 Jul 2009
Paul Rudd recommended me this movie. Horrifying. One could make the perfectly valid argument, with scientific proof, point by point, that Mac & Me is the worst movie of 1980's. Where to start?
There are moments of pure unintentional comedic gold, and they're all fucking cringe-inducing. There's the fact that the only foods aliens seem to enjoy are Skittlesâ?¢, Coca Colaâ?¢ , and McDonald'sâ?¢. It is so embarrassingly, shamefully awesome. There's the dinner theater caliber acting. There's the mysterious lifeforms themselves, and they're downright hideous. Like, Elephant Man levels of external grotesque. Instead of sympathizing with these characters I just became really scared. There's the unforgettable cliff scene, the scene where the whole grocery store EXPLODES, the long Ronald McDonald dancing scene, the vacuum cleaner scene...
Mac & Me simply exudes the kind of bankrupt filmmaking that can make ten Michael Bays beg for the sweet release of death. It gives to its viewer the kind of indescribable pain I wouldn't wish on my worst enemies. This is a work of pure, wretched evil. See it.
