Review of Ma mère (2004) by Corey C — 28 Nov 2007
Though I admire this film for daring to be so blunt about such a strange and uncomfortable subject, I feel as though it ultimatly fails in the exploration of a new type of Oedipus myth. Isabelle Huppert is sad and sexy, the type of acting she could do in a coma, and that's what it feels like the writer/director of the film was in when he was at work.
The film dies after about 40 minutes and fails to anything other than shock. There is no payoff to the emotions raised. I had such high expectations for this film and the second/third act totally ruined them.
Such a shame.
