Review of M. Butterfly (1993) by Morten Ø — 23 Dec 2008
I must admit that I'm not a big fan of romantic dramas in a historical context. This movie was a bit different though and the end - which I won't reveal here - was a real surprise to me. Jeremy Irons plays the role as a french diplomat right on the spot and the quite wicked last scene with him is truely unforgetable.
I guess the theme is something as ordinary as love makes you blind, but this theme is really delivered convincing. The semi spy story and the cultural revolution that fill a big part of the screentime are both slightly boring and thin portraited, which make the movie somewhat uninteresting quite often.
