Review of M. Butterfly (1993) by Caleb C — 05 Jan 2012
I do think Jeremy Irons was slightly off in some scenes here. This film however is very bland compared to all of Cronenbergs other films. It is not bad what is here, but nothing is really memorable here.
No need for a second watch. The weird elements which are classic in Cronenberg films are what save this one entirely from becoming unwatchable. I can say that this is the only Cronenberg film I have seen that is nearly a flop.
What this film needed was something out the realm of reality or some polishing on the script at least.. I could have gone without Irons saying "Butterfly" or "Oh, Butterfly" passionetly every 5 minutes of the film it seemed.
Either way, this is worth a look for any hardcore Cronenberg fan even though, it doesn't entirely flow that well with his other work.
