Review of M (1931) by Kaustubh P — 09 Feb 2009
For a film that came out way back in 1931, M is surprisingly effective. M tells the story of a serial killer who targets children. This killer has already claimed eight lives. The police seems to be getting nowhere in its investigation, so the city criminals decide to catch the killer themselves.
M confuses me - it starts with a whodunnit air & one begins to feel that the whole movie is going to be about finding out the identity of the killer. But then the killer's identity is established all of a sudden without much explanation & the film abruptly changes from being a mystery to a cat-and-mouse chase thriller.
Another grouse is that none of the characters were properly built. Despite all this, M is still a very entertaining film & can easily be called a masterpiece.
