Review of M (1931) by Tamara S — 07 Apr 2009
This movie was not what I expected it to be. I was under the impression it was some sort of mystery thriller film noir. It definitely set the template for film noir. But instead of a thriller, it is more of a procedural, along the lines of a CSI show.
Beautifully shot, with an unreal mastery of design and cinematography - this movie is ahead of its time. It examines the concept of mob mentality in such a way that totally challenges you to re-examine your own thoughts and beliefs.
It is also interesting in a historical sense, being that it was filmed in pre-Nazi Germany and many of the social and economic situations of that time are on display here. Peter Lorre is outstanding in an unsympathetic (maybe - maybe not) roll that would typecast him forever.
Awesome stuff.
