Review of M (1931) by Joe T — 07 Jul 2009
Fritz Langs decision to allow silent movie acting in a "talkie" just means this can't stand the test of time (no matter what your bearded film studies professor might say). Peter Lorre's acting crosses over into pure parody on at least 5 different occassions.
Too many close up, over-acted reaction shots seriously.
A serial killer that whistles childrens songs in a meancing way caps the stupid cliche. I don't care if this was the first movie to do it.
Felt extremely dated, even for an early 30's movies.
Some really striking camera work - scene of the reveal down a hole where the movement of the camera draws you in.
