Review of M (1931) by Navin P — 15 Jan 2010
An absolutely incredible film. Everything about it is so far ahead of its time. The camerawork from Fritz Lang is stupendous with so many various shots that would seem impossible given the infancy of film at the time which provide an odd and eerily personal tone to the film.
Many of the silent moments in the film, strictly because sound pictures did not quite have a regular formula yet, are haunting within the tone and the subject matter. Such a deep dark film, and Peter Lorre who is brilliant in more or less a supporting role is bone-chilling (his monologue at the end gave me goosebumps).
