Review of M (1931) by Bob V — 08 May 2011
Ground-breaking German film that will chill you with its powerful images, and its indictment of all layers of society, including the viewer. Peter Lorre is brilliant and just plain frightening.
Purely technical, "M" was a milestone in cinema because of its use of a leid-motif for the serial killer character, something Lang took from the opera, and which has become all-pervasive in films since then. It is also usually named as the first film to use voice-over, another staple of film-making ever since.
